Mezzo-soprano Sofia Vinnik joined the ensemble of the Oper Graz in the 2024/25 season, where she appeared as Dorabella in Così fan tutte and Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In the 2025/26 season, she expanded her repertoire with role debuts as Phébé in Rameau’s Castor et Pollux, Idamante in Mozart’s Idomeneo, and Octavian in Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier.
Sofia was previously an ensemble member at the Vienna Volksoper, performing as Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, and O. Zelenka in the Nestroy Award-nominated world premiere of Lass uns die Welt vergessen. She began her career as a member of the Young Ensemble (JET) at the Theater an der Wien, where she portrayed Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia and Orphée in Orphée et Euridice. Further engagements have taken her to the Salzburg Festival, Musikverein Wien, Heidelberger Frühling, and the Schumannfest Bonn. Sofia was a finalist in the 2018 International Cesti Competition for Baroque Opera and received the young talent award at the Bundeswettbewerb Gesang in the same year.
In the demanding title role of Octavian, the young mezzo-soprano Sofia Vinnik delivers a masterful performance, with a rich middle register and a powerful upper range. Through both her singing and her acting, she vividly conveys every emotion of the young man on the threshold of manhood, making his inner world tangible to the audience. An artist one hopes to encounter in many more roles in the future.

The Oper Graz will bring back Barbara David-Brüesch’s production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Così fan tutte in the 2026/27 season, with performances scheduled for June 2027. Sofia Vinnik appears as Dorabella, a role in which she has been praised for her vocal refinement and characterful nuance.

Sofia Vinnik is outstanding as Dorabella, conveying both the character’s spirited wit and playfulness and the emotional depth of her lyrical arias with bell-clear tone, shaped with great subtlety and a delicate yet firmly anchored timbre.
